Grocery shopping at Asian Market, The Base

Today, I went grocery shopping at the Asian market.

In New Zealand, the main grocery stores are Woolworths, PAK'nSave and New World, but when I want Japanese or Asian ingredients, we usually go to the Asian market.

If we want Japanese ingredients, we always go to "Japan Mart"...but unfortunately, Hamilton does not have their brunch at then moment, so I went to one of the Chinese Asian market in The Base.

We quickly found Japanese mochi there!

Sometimes I just crave this japanese mochi ;(

It's $16.99, which is a little over 600 JPY when converted.

Today, I came looking for frozen tobikko (flying fish roe) but it seems they don't have it here.

I also bought tofu for tonight's hot pot.

They have square tofu like I usually see in Japan, but they also have this tube-like shaped tofu. I first discovered this shape of tofu when I came to New Zealand, but I bet you can find it in Japan if you look for it.

Since it's an Asian market, most of the products were from China, Korea and Japan but I also found a shelve like below the photo.

Ukrainian pastry

Yes, the products there are from Ukraine.

Speaking of Ukraine, it's a country that has experienced wartime conditions due to Russia's invasion in 2022.

While we hear less about it in the news now, we have a mindset of wanting to support Ukraine if there's anything we can do, so we try to buy Ukrainian products whenever possible at home.

Last time, we bought chocolate croissants, which weren't too sweet and had a nice cocoa aroma!

Today, we bought cappuccino-flavored filling, chocolate wafers and puff pastries.

We returned home and tried the puff pastry — it was subtly sweet and delicious!

There was something like honey sandwiched in between. I also appreciate that they come individually packaged in sets of two!

SLAVICA BAKERY seems to be a shop in New Zealand that imports and sells Ukrainian sweets.

They even have a branch in Hamilton! I'd love to try their other sweets as well.

We hope that by buying Ukrainian products, we can contribute even a little to supporting Ukraine.

We also grateful to the owner of this shop for selling multicultural ingredients :).
